El Olympic Arena es un estadio construido entre 1961 y 1964 en Tokio. Fue diseñado por Kenzo Tange en 1960. La planta del estadio tiene forma de dos semicírculos ligeramente desplazados uno de otro en relación al centro. Las entradas se encuentran localizadas en los lados cóncavos. La cubierta se apoya sobre dos pilares reforzados y está ensamblada mediante un sistema de cables de acero sobre los que están soldadas las placas esmaltadas. La forma curva de la cubierta sirve para hacerla más resistente al viento, el cual puede llegar a alcanzar nivel de huracán en esta región.  

Después de que Tokio presentase su candidatura para los Juegos Olímpicos de 2020, se ha hablado sobre la posibilidad de renovar o reconstruir el Estadio Olímpico. En noviembre de 2012, representaciones del nuevo estadio fueron reveladas. Éste será construido a partir de un diseño de la arquitecta Zaha Hadid. Está planeado que el estadio actual sea demolido en 2015 y que el nuevo esté terminado en marzo de 2019.

El diseño del estadio tendrá una capacidad para 80.000 personas; una cubierta que se puede replegar; será medioambientalmente eficiente; complementará el entorno; permitirá el tráfico fluido; y finalmente, estará terminado y listo para albergar el Mundial de Rugby de 2019.

PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE NEW HOST OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES

The Olympic Arena is a sports stadium built between 1961 and 1964 in Tokyo. It was designed by Kenzo Tange in 1960. The plan of the larger stadium is in the form of two semi-circles, slightly displaced in relation to one another. The entrances are located in the concave sides. The roof is supported on two reinforced pillars and it’s made up of a system of steel cables onto which enameled plates are then soldered. The curving form of the roof serves to make it more resistant to wind, which can reach hurricane force in this region.

After Tokyo submitted their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics, there has been talk of possibly renovating or reconstructing the National Olympic Stadium. In November 2012, renderings of the new stadium were revealed. The new one will be built to a design by architect Zaha Hadid. It is planned that the existing stadium is to be demolished in 2015 and the new one completed in March 2019.

The stadium design will have to seat 80.000 people; have a retractable able roof; be environmentally efficient; complement the surrounding landscape; allow for smooth traffic; and, finally, be up and ready to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
