Un muro de contención es una estructura de contención rígida. Se utilizan para detener masas de tierra u otros materiales sueltos cuando las condiciones no permiten que estas masas asuman sus pendientes naturales. Estas condiciones se presentan cuando el ancho de una excavación, corte o terraplén está restringido por condiciones de propiedad, utilización de la estructura o economía.

A retaining wall is a rigid structure of containment. It is used to stop land masses or other loose materials when conditions do not allow these masses to assume its natural slopes. These conditions occur when an excavation width, a cut or an embarkment is restricted by conditions of property, use of the structure or economy.
