En Llamas. Bakú Flame Towers.

(English version and glossary below)

(English version)

With a maximum height of 190 m, the Baku Flame Towers are one of the higher structures of Azerbaijan. It's a project by HOK architects. Construction was stopped several times, forcing engineers to combat the frequent winds of Baku, while taking into account the seismic activity in the area. Because of these strong winds, some parts of the construction were carried out without the use of cranes.

The towers create a triangular formation joined each other by a base formed by an undulating podium. The curved shapes of the towers end up on tip and curve around the gardens of the roof, providing a measure of protection.

The complex consists of three towers that share a common podium that acts as an anchor of the whole project, providing entertainment and a shopping centre for residents and visitors. Each of the tower has a different use: Tower 1 is completely residential, Tower 2 is a hotel and Tower 3 is an office building.

Major structural systems of the three towers are raised with reinforced concrete. On the other hand, floors from the top of towers were built with filigree steel frames.

The primary framework of the spires is a special frame with three joints constructed with round tubes of 610 mm in diameter. According to the geometry of the design, in the construction were used sections biaxially curved of the tubes, welding connection points. To minimize deformations of the building, 30 meters high, vertical steel columns, on the sides, were joined to the frame by means of connections with flexural strenght. A special triangularcross section, made with typical metal sheets and rods of steel, was used for these columns so that to allow a view out the widest possible.

To withstand wind loads, additional diagonals were needed in the curved back side of steel constructions, in order to reduce the total deformation in the spire of the towers to the required 90 mm.

The main materials used for the structure were reinforced concrete and 6.10 cm diameter steel tube.

The façades are fully glazed and used a mixture of orange and blue tinted glass. Moreover, the façades are completely covered with LED screens, with more than 10,000 lights, showing the gentle movement of the flames, visible from points further away from the city. This lighting creates the effect of giant torches that emphasize the idea of towers, incorporated in their name (Baku Flame Towers). At night, its external LED are lit to represent the flames, a waving flag of Azerbaijan and other moving images.
