La red de ventilación sirve, principalmente, como protección de los cierres hidráulicos del sistema de evacuación de aguas fecales (sifones). Con el fin de asegurar un buen funcionamiento en el sistema de evacuación es fundamental tener cuidado especial a la hora de dimensionar la ventilación del mismo. Es una práctica habitual descuidar la instalación del sistema de ventilación, cosa no recomendable, ya que la salida de malos olores de los aparatos sanitarios depende en su totalidad del buen funcionamiento del mismo.
Según el Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE) tiene que existir:
- Ventilación primaria en todos los casos.
- Ventilación secundaria a partir de 7 plantas o de 11 si las bajantes están sobredimensionadas, conectadas a la bajante en plantas alternas hasta 15 plantas y en todas ellas con 15 plantas o más.
- Ventilación terciaria a partir de 15 plantas.

Ventilation network serves mainly as a protection of the closures of the hydraulic system for the disposal of sewage (siphons). In order to ensure a good performance in the evacuation system is fundamental to take special care when it comes to sizing up the ventilation system. It is common practice to neglect the installation of the ventilation system, thing not recommended, since the odors of the sanitary ware output depends entirely on the proper functioning of it.
According to the Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE) has to be:
- Primary ventilation system in all cases.
- Secondary ventilation system from 7 storeys or 11 if downspouts are oversized, connected to the downpipe in alternate floors to 15 storeys and in all of them with 15 storeys or more.
- Tertiary ventilation system from 15 floors.
