The monument of the Reformer's Tower was inaugurated on July 19, 1935, and its name was due to the commemoration of the centenary of the birth of general Justo Rufino Barrios, former President of Guatemala between 1873 and 1875, who carried out several reforms for which was awarded the title of "The reformer".
The Reformer's Tower is an iron structure that reaches 71,85 meters high and was built in the United States by the United States Steel Products Company. It's a galvanized iron structure resembling the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and was erected for the Golden State International Exposition of 1934, held in California, where it was presented for sale. Guatemalans who saw the tower on display, when they returned to Guatemala, spoke to Jorge Unico about its beauty, and he decided to buy the tower.
According to reports from Secretariat of Promotion in 1936, when the parts of the steel structure were placed on the chosen place, several mechanical experts of the company that sold it came with the goal of placing the huge pieces of iron. In addition, a local team was responsible for reviewing plans for its installation, which corresponded to foundations and drainage.
At the top of the Tower is a bell which was donated by the Goverment of Belgium along with a marker, to become a sort of Lighthouse. Over the years it stopped working and a new marker, which also stopped working, was not installed until 1986. In 1994, it was replaced by another, donated by American Airlines company, that serves as a guide for aircraft heading to the local airport.
